3rd April 2020 by Jamie Raftery 1 Comment

    JUMP TO RECIPE

Golden Turmeric Milk is an ancient Indian Ayurveda recipe dating back almost 3000 years. It promotes a good nights sleep and contains anti-inflammatory properties.

    ABOUT THIS RECIPE

In Ayurveda (one of the oldest systems of natural healing in the world), warm milk is a common remedy for sleeplessness.

This is a comforting drink best enjoyed in the evening time. The warm aromatic Indian spices evoke comfort and relaxation.

It takes just 5 minutes to prepare this recipe, allow the spices to gently infuse for a further 5 minutes, and enjoy the aromas that will take over your kitchen.

    HEALTH BENEFITS OF TURMERIC

Ayurvedic and Chinese medicine have been prescribing golden turmeric milk for centuries.

Turmeric is known for it's antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.

Turmeric is a true superfood, along with the fresh ginger root and Indian spices this warming beverage will have you feeling relaxed and rejuvenated.

There are many other uses for turmeric including treatment for:

    • heartburn
    • stomach pain, Crohn’s disease, and ulcerative colitis
    • diarrhea
    • intestinal gas
    • stomach bloating
    • loss of appetite
    • jaundice
    • liver problems
    • stomach ulcers
    • irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)
    • high cholesterol
    • skin inflammation from radiation treatment
    • fatigue
    • It is also used for headaches, bronchitis, colds, lung infections, fibromyalgia, fever, menstrual problems, itchy skin, recovery after surgery, cancers, Alzheimer’s disease, diabetes, water retention, urinary bladder inflammation, and kidney problems. (1)

    Curcumin vs. Turmeric

Have you heard the term curcumin and wondered what the difference is between curcumin and turmeric? Curcumin is the main compound in turmeric, the one to which most of turmeric’s health benefits are attributed.

WHY COMBINE BLACK PEPPER WITH TURMERIC

Curcumin in turmeric and piperine in black pepper have been shown to improve health due to their anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and disease-fighting qualities.

Unfortunately, the curcumin in turmeric is poorly absorbed into the bloodstream. As a result, you could be missing out on its advantages to health.

The piperine compound in pepper enhances the absorption in curcumin.

INGREDIENTS YOU WILL NEED TO MAKE GOLDEN TURMERIC MILK

    • Ground Turmeric Powder:
In this case, the ground turmeric powder is actually better than the fresh root as it’s more concentrated.
    • Ground Black Pepper:
This is key to the absorption of the nutrients in turmeric.
    • Homemade Nut Milk:
A little fat is needed to help absorb all of the nutrients in golden milk. Because this is a healing drink, I like to make my own almond milk. If you have to buy your nut milk, look for something unsweetened that is is not overly processed.
    • Fat:
Almond oil, coconut oil or seed oils all work well if you’re using nut milk; you don’t need to add extra fat if using the full-fat coconut milk.
    • Spices:
Add any of the following to your golden milk for extra flavor and health benefits:
      • Ground cardamom
      • Star anise
      • Clove
      • Fennel seed
      • Fresh or ground ginger
      • Ground cinnamon
      • Raw honey
      • Pure vanilla extract

HOW TO MAKE GOLDEN TURMERIC MILK

    • Add the almond milk, cracked black pepper, turmeric powder, cinnamon powder, grated ginger, pink salt and coconut oil to a small saucepan.
    • Bring slowly to a very gentle simmer.
    • Taste and adjust seasoning, add some sweetener to taste.
    • Whisk well and pour into nice serving mugs.
    • Sprinkle with some more cracked black pepper and cinnamon powder.

Another easier way to make Golden Turmeric Milk is to put all the ingredients into a high speed blender and blend for 1-2 minutes. The friction will heat the mix up to a nice drinking temperature and give it a light foamy latte consistency.

    SWEET DREAMS

Try incorporating this recipe into your evening routine.

Put a nice pot of Indian Spiced Turmeric Milk on to infuse gently. Turn on some relaxing music, switch your phone onto flight mode and get cosy for a good nights sleep.

    Method

    • Assemble all ingredients.
    • Put the almond milk, coconut oil, turmeric, cinnamon, black pepper, pink salt, sweetener and grated ginger into a small saucepan.
    • Warm gently, bring to about 90c – do not boil.
    • Whisk well.
    • Check flavour and add more sweetener or spice if desired.
    • Pour into a mug, sprinkle with cracked black pepper and cinnamon.
    • Sit back, relax and enjoy.

    Recipe Notes

    • If you can source fresh turmeric root try adding 1 teaspoon of fresh grated root.
    • Depending on what plant milk you use, try reducing the sweetener as some store bought milks are already sweetened.
    • If your palette is accustomed to Indian spices, increase the quantity. You may also like to add nutmeg, fennel seed or cardamom to take this Moon Milk to a whole other level!
    • You can use whatever plant-milks you have available. Cashew, rice, coconut or oat milks work well or you could try a 50/50 of your 2 favourite milks!
    • Equally delicious served chilled over ice.
